Filigree

Marija Tasevska

A silver thread finer than hair, woven over hours.

Biography

Marija is one of the few women to have mastered Debar filigree in full. She trained for eleven years under master Ǵorǵi Stojanov, who regarded taking her on not as a concession but as a necessary continuation.

She works in Skopje's Old Bazaar, in a shop that shares a wall with a coppersmith — a neighbourhood as old as the bazaar itself.

The Craft

„Half a second of flame is the difference between a jewel and a drop of silver.“

Sterling silver is drawn into wire thinner than 0.3 mm, twisted into a double thread and woven into motifs, then soldered onto a frame. A larger piece contains hundreds of individual solder joints.

The hardest part, she says, is not the weaving but the soldering: a flame held half a second too long melts the thread that took all morning to weave.
