Third-generation carver of the Ohrid school.
The Dimovski workshop has operated in Ohrid since 1931. Stefan is the third generation — he entered it at twelve, to sweep up shavings.
He continues the deep-relief technique in walnut, but alongside church commissions he now makes pieces for the home: panels, boxes, serving trays. The motif is the same, he says; only the purpose changes.
„Wood remembers everything. That is why you must never hurry it.“
The wood — walnut or boxwood — seasons at least four years before a chisel touches it. He works with over a hundred chisels, most of them inherited; the oldest belonged to his grandfather.
Floral motifs are built across three to five depth planes. A medium panel takes some two hundred hours. Nothing is machine-worked; the chisel marks are the signature of the hands.
